Container houses are quickly becoming a popular choice for people seeking unique, modern structures outside traditional urban centers.
Many homeowners across Kenya are embracing container living to build retreats in city outskirts, farmhouses on ranches, and even permanent residences on rural ancestral land.
Such was the case in Mumias, Kakamega County, where our client envisioned a functional and stylish container farmhouse on their family farm. After researching the idea of container homes in Kenya, the client discovered our social media pages and was impressed by our previous designs.
Inspired by the flexibility, speed of construction, and minimal approval requirements, they decided to make their dream a reality through Containers by Litu.
Building the Foundation of a Modern Farmhouse
We all know how important foundations are in any construction project. We had to visit the client’s site prior to construction, just to have a feel of the ground on which the container house will be placed.
Selecting and Preparing the Container
The project began at our Embakasi yard in Nairobi, where we sourced and prepared a suitable 40ft shipping container.
The container was cut and reinforced to create enough space for a well-planned 2-bedroom layout, complete with provisions for a kitchen, living area, and bathroom.
Paintwork, Insulation, and Interior Preparations
The container underwent a full paint job to protect it from rust while giving it a modern finish. Our team added insulation using gypsum boards and styroform, creating comfortable interiors that could withstand both hot afternoons and cool Mumias nights.
At the same time, electrical and plumbing provisions were fitted, ready for connection once the container reached the site.
Transporting and Installing the Farmhouse in Mumias
Ground Preparation and Placement
The next step was delivering the container to the client’s farm in Mumias. Before installation, our team visited the site to level the ground and prepare a strong foundation. This stage was crucial for the stability and long-term durability of the farmhouse.
Roofing and Final Touches
After the container was positioned, our crew added a slanted roof for extra weather protection and to improve the overall aesthetic.
Doors and windows were fitted to bring in natural light and airflow, while internal finishing was polished to create a cozy, livable space.
The end result was a fully functional 2-bedroom farmhouse that seamlessly blended modern container design with rural charm.
A Unique Attraction in the Village
The completion of this farmhouse brought excitement to the local community. It stood out as the first container house in the village, sparking curiosity and admiration among neighbors and visitors.
Today, it serves as both a comfortable family retreat and a source of inspiration for aspiring homeowners across Mumias who are beginning to explore container living as a practical and affordable solution.
