Tiny living is no longer just a global trend; it is steadily gaining traction here in Kenya. Around the world, container homes have become a hallmark of affordable, sustainable, and stylish living.
Europe and the West have embraced container housing for years, and now foreigners and Kenyans in the diaspora are at the forefront of bringing these innovative living concepts back home.
Their vision is transforming the housing landscape, proving that functional, eco-friendly spaces can also be elegant.
Containers by Litu stands at the heart of this transformation, where we are turning creative ideas into reality and positioning ourselves as leaders in Kenya’s growing tiny living movement.
From TikTok Inspiration to Dream Home in Kisaju
The journey began when our Danish client discovered our work on TikTok, where Containers by Litu showcases container conversion projects.
Impressed by the designs and quality, he reached out to us with an idea: a modern 3-bedroom container home in the serene location of Kisaju, Nairobi.
Our team collaborated closely with the client to refine his vision, create workable designs, and prepare for construction.
The plan involved using one 40-ft container and one 20-ft container, which were meticulously conjoined to create a spacious, functional, and comfortable living environment.
Construction at the Embakasi Yard
The project was done in two phases in a span of one month, just as we had promised our client.
Container Modifications and Fabrication
The initial phase of construction took place at our Embakasi yard in Nairobi. Here, the containers were cut to size, painted, and fitted with doors and windows.
Interior finishing included tile installation, insulation using gypsum and styroform, and partitioning to accommodate three bedrooms, a living area, a kitchen, and bathrooms.
Every detail was considered to create a balance of durability, comfort, and modern aesthetics. By completing much of the fabrication at the yard, we streamlined the project timeline and reduced on-site disruptions.
Preparing the Site in Kisaju
This is where it gets interesting, as the project took shape in the quiet neighbourhood of Kisaju near the town of Kitengela.
Groundwork and Foundation
Before delivery, our team visited the site in Kisaju to prepare for container placement. Measurements were taken, and the ground was carefully leveled to provide a stable base. This crucial stage took about two weeks, giving us a perfect foundation for positioning the containers.
The Kisaju location offered more than just practicality; it provided a serene escape from city life. Open landscapes, fresh air, and expansive views promised to elevate the home beyond a simple structure into a lifestyle retreat.
Transportation and On-Site Finishing
Since we also have a reliable transport and logistics department, we were confident that the containers would be delivered to the site in perfect condition.
Delivery and Placement
Once the containers were ready, they were transported from our Embakasi yard to Kisaju. The installation was executed smoothly, aligning the units perfectly to form the 3-bedroom layout.
Roofing, Plumbing, and Electrical Work
After positioning, our team focused on the finishing touches. Roofing was added for extra weather protection, plumbing was installed for kitchen and bathroom use, and electrical fittings were prepared.
The client requested an off-grid living system, so provisions for solar panels were integrated, enabling the home to run sustainably on clean energy.
A Home Surrounded by Beauty
The Kisaju site offered more than a house. It provided an experience. From the container home, the client enjoys breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the open landscape.
The calm environment, combined with the unique character of a container home, created the perfect blend of modern living and natural tranquility.
Project Completion and Client Handover
In just one month, the project moved from idea to reality. The Danish client was delighted with the final result: a stunning 3-bedroom shipping container home tailored to his needs and lifestyle.
The house not only met his expectations but also reflected his dream of sustainable, stylish, and affordable living in Kenya.
